CBD resin or CBD flower: what are the differences and which should you choose?

In short: CBD flower is dried and cured hemp bud, just as it grew. CBD resin (often called CBD hash) is the most aromatic part of this flower, its trichomes, harvested and then pressed. Same plant, two very different experiences: flower plays on freshness and the clarity of the terpenes, resin on density, texture, and deeper aromas.
CBD flower: the plant, without detour
A CBD flower is the floral top of a legal hemp variety, harvested at maturity, slowly dried, then cured for several weeks. Nothing is removed, nothing is added: what you see is the plant.
- What makes it unique: each variety has its profile (citrus, red fruits, gas, wood...) that you recognize as soon as you open the bag.
- What makes its quality: the genetics, the cultivation method (hydro or living soil), and above all a controlled drying and curing, which preserve the terpenes.
- How to judge it: dense buds, a bright color, clearly visible trichomes, and a frank smell, never hay.

CBD resin: the concentrated essence of the flower
Trichomes are those tiny crystals that cover the flower. That's where the aromas are concentrated. Resin is obtained by separating these trichomes from the plant, then pressing them to form a more or less soft brick.
There are two major families of production:
- Mechanical methods (dry sifting, ice water extraction): we separate the trichomes by cold and sieve, without any chemicals.
- Solvent extractions: more industrial, they sometimes leave residues and give products that are more neutral in taste.
At Legit Growerz, our resins are made without solvent and without any additives. That's what gives them this creamy texture and these "old-school" aromas.
The real differences, point by point
- Appearance: the flower is presented in airy or compact buds; the resin in a brown to golden slab, to break or crumble.
- Aromas: the flower is brighter and more "green", with very distinct top notes; the resin is rounder, spicier, earthier or gourmand.
- Texture: the flower is dry and sticky; a good resin is soft, almost malleable, and warms up between the fingers.
- Storage: resin withstands time better, because the pressed trichomes are less exposed to the air than those of a flower.
- Price per gram: resin requires a lot of raw material for little finished product; at equal quality, it is therefore not cheaper than flower.
How to recognize a quality CBD resin?
The market is flooded with "cut" or sprayed resins with synthetic molecules. A few reflexes to not get fooled:
- The smell must be natural and complex. A chemical, sweet or solvent smell is a red flag.
- The texture must be soft and homogeneous, without hard grains or plastic appearance.
- The transparency of the seller: origin, manufacturing method, THC level below 0.3%. If they cannot answer you, walk away.

So, flower or resin: which one to choose?
- You like to recognize a variety, compare profiles and smell the very clear terpenes: go for flower. The Discovery Pack brings together 4 flowers of 3 g to compare.
- You are looking for something denser and rounder, with spicy or gourmand notes: resin is made for you. Try the Dark Yoda, spicy and earthy, or the Kaptain Krunch, more gourmand.
- You are still hesitating: take both in small format. It's the best way to know what you prefer.
To choose well according to the aromas, our guide How to choose your CBD details the main terpenes and what they bring.
Properly store flowers and resins
In both cases, the enemies are the same: light, heat and air. Keep your products in an airtight glass jar, away from light, at room temperature. Avoid the refrigerator, where humidity damages the trichomes.
