How to Choose the Right CBD: Terpenes, Quality, Transparency

Comment bien choisir son CBD : terpènes, qualité, transparence

In brief: to choose the right CBD, first look at the format (flower or resin), then the aromatic profile—that is, the terpenes. Next, check the quality (appearance, smell, cultivation) and the seller’s transparency (batch analysis, no synthetic compounds). Here’s a simple guide to help you stop buying at random.

1. Flower or resin?

  • Flower: this is the top of the plant, dried and trimmed. It expresses the variety’s aromas best. Ideal for discovering different profiles.
  • Resin (hash, pollen): it’s made by collecting the trichomes, the tiny crystals that concentrate the aromas. The taste is rounder, more spicy or rich, and the texture varies depending on how it’s pressed (soft pollen, firmer hash).

If you’re just starting out, begin with flowers: they’re the best way to figure out what you like.

2. Terpenes: a flower’s true calling card

Terpenes are aromatic molecules naturally produced by the plant. They give each variety its smell and taste. They’re also found in lemon, pepper, lavender, and pine. Here are the main ones:

  • Myrcene: earthy and fruity notes, ripe fruit. Very common in “red berry” profiles.
  • Limonene: citrus, lemon, fresh zest. The terpene behind tangy profiles.
  • Caryophyllene: peppery, spicy, woody. Also found in black pepper.
  • Pinene: pine, resinous notes, a fresh sensation.
  • Linalool: floral, lavender.
  • Terpinolene: fruity, floral, slightly herbal. Typical of tropical profiles.
  • Humulene: hops, woody, earthy.

In practical terms: if you like citrus, look for a flower rich in limonene. If you prefer dark, fruity notes, go for myrcene. If you like bold, peppery, woody flavors, caryophyllene is your ally.

3. How to recognize a quality flower

  • Appearance: dense, well-trimmed buds covered in trichomes (the little white crystals). No excess leaves and no stems everywhere.
  • Smell: it should be clear and natural as soon as you open the bag. A chemical or artificially sweet smell—or no smell at all—is a bad sign.
  • Texture: neither too dry (it crumbles into dust) nor damp. A properly dried flower should break slightly under your fingers.
  • Cultivation: indoor growing generally produces denser, more aromatic flowers thanks to a controlled climate. Slow drying (2 to 3 weeks) preserves the terpenes.

4. Demand transparency

This is the most important point. A good seller should be able to provide:

  • Batch analysis, showing a THC level below 0.3%, the legal limit in France.
  • A guarantee that no synthetic compounds have been added (HHC, PINACA, sprayed-on isolates…). These products are dangerous: we explain everything in our article Fake CBD: the dangers of synthetic cannabinoids.
  • Origin: who grew the flower, and how.

5. Store it properly

Keep your flowers away from light and heat, in their airtight bag or a glass jar. Proper storage preserves the terpenes—and therefore the flavor—for weeks.
