Trichomes : comment juger une fleur CBD à l'œil

In short: trichomes are the tiny crystals that cover a hemp flower. This is where the plant produces its aromas and cannabinoids. Knowing how to observe them means knowing how to judge the quality of a CBD flower even before smelling it.

What are trichomes?

Look closely at a beautiful flower: it seems dusted with sugar or frost. These little shiny dots are the trichomes. They are tiny mushroom-shaped glands, with a stalk and a round head.

The plant produces them to protect itself from insects, UV rays, and the cold. For us, they have another benefit: it is in their heads that terpenes (the aromas) and cannabinoids like CBD are concentrated.

Why they matter so much

  • More trichomes = more aromas. A well-covered flower will generally have a more powerful and complex scent.
  • Intact trichomes = a well-treated flower. They are fragile: a rough harvest, poor drying, or careless transport breaks them.
  • Trichomes are the raw material for resin. Hash is simply harvested and pressed trichomes. Find out more in our complete CBD resin guide.

How to observe them

With the naked eye, you can already see if a flower is "frosted" or dull. With a simple pocket magnifier (or your phone's zoom), you can go further:

  • Round and well-formed heads: the trichomes are intact.
  • Many headless stalks: the flower has been handled too much or poorly stored.
  • Even coverage: the plant was grown under good conditions.

What their color tells you

Growers observe the color of the trichomes to choose the harvest time:

  • Transparent: the plant is not yet mature.
  • Milky: the plant is approaching maturity.
  • Amber: maturity is advanced.

Each grower has their preference depending on the desired profile. What matters to you is the result: a flower harvested at the right time has more developed aromas.

Traps to avoid

Be careful, a shiny flower is not always a good flower. Some flowers are sprayed with extracts or synthetic molecules, or rolled in resin powder to look more "frosted". The signs that should alert you: an overly uniform appearance, as if dusted, an abnormally sticky texture, or a chemical smell. We talk about it in Fake CBD: the danger of synthetic cannabinoids.

The magnifier test on our flowers

The most crystallized flowers in our catalog, such as Émeraude Noire or Mimosa Kush, are a good example of what we look for: dense heads, covered in intact trichomes. Discover all our CBD flowers, and to find out what else to look for, read our article on drying and curing.
